Lexington Green Recommended Reading & Viewing

Sources & Enjoyment!

Books

Battle Road, by Charles H. Bradford (The Nimrod Press) - Nifty little pamphlet that covers the action of April 19, 1775.

Lexington: Gateway to Freedom, Alford S. Peckham (Lexington Chamber of Commerce) - A small pamphlet that includes photographs and descriptions of all the pertinent sites around Lexington, Massachussetts.

Lexington and Concord, by Arthur B. Tourtellot (W. W. Norton & Company) - Excellent and detailed narrative of events. (formerly entitled: William Diamond's Drum)

The Minutemen: The First Fight, by John R. Galvin (Pergamon-Brassey's Publishers) - Excellent piece of work! Goes into the historical origins of the minutemen, and gives a colorful, insightful interpretation of the 19th of April. Focuses on the Lexington militia.

Rebels and Redcoats, by George F. Scheer and Hugh F. Rankin (Da Capo Press) - The entire war through the eyes of those who fought in it.

Videos

April Morning - Stars Tommy Lee Jones, Robert Urich ... Almost like watching a re-enactment on the Green itself! Good stuff!

Games

1776 - Out of print! Was created and published by the now defunct, though incorporated into the Hasbro Co., Avalon Hill Game Company. Excellent board recreation of the conflict, beginning with the siege of Boston and ending, possibly, at Yorktown. Superb features like bateaux travel, French intervention, the unpredictability of militia units, winter restrictions, Naval forces, building forts, Indians, etc. If you can find it ... BUY IT! Even better, are the added-on [though rare] leaders & optional rules ... You play various scenarios or the entire Revolution. Campaign games can take days, literally, but it'll pass  like minutes. Combat is resolved by odds - based on forces arrayed, terrain, entrenchments, etc. - PLUS tactical decisions you make. Very unique gaming system in its day!

Birth of America - Great news!! 1776 [see above!] for computer!!! No board to set-up, no pieces to lose. The map is incredibly similar to the old game and it plays very much like it as well. Beautiful look & feel. Slick AI. Elegant system! Buy it! Play it! Enjoy!
