Remember The Alamo! Behind the most famous battle cry in American history is a story of ambition and heroism, greed and vanity, desperation and defeat. REMEMBER THE ALAMO Behind-the-Scenes Featurette. Introduction and Conclusion to REMEMBER THE ALAMO with Dennis Quaid. Alamo Timeline. THE HISTORY CHANNEL PRESENTS: THE ALAMO examines the epic battle through four acclaimed programs from The History Channel™ and A&E®, presenting a compelling picture of the forces, personalities and events that converged at the San Antonio mission in 1836. March 6, 1836: A massacre of Americans at the Mexican Army's hands made "Remember the Alamo" an immortal Texan battle cry. But is this history viewed through an American lens? With distance from the heat of battle, a Mexican version of the controversy emerges. What caused Jim Bowie and Davy Crockett to run from their pasts to become heroes in death? How did a struggle for independence become a race war? In this 90-minute investigation, we expose new evidence in this grand victory with a dark secret. Included in this 2-volume DVD set are the following programs: Remember The Alamo - New research dispels some long-held beliefs about what really happened in the showdown between Santa Anna's army and Davy Crockett, William Barret Travis, Jim Bowie, and their group of American volunteers. The Real West: The Battle of the Alamo - Host Kenny Rogers focuses on the strained collaboration among Davy Crockett, Jim Bowie and William Barret Travis. The Real West: The Texas Rangers - Ride into the past to see how these legendary lawmen patrolled a vast and wild territory. BIOGRAPHY®: Davy Crockett: American Frontier Legend - Experts explode the myths surrounding the backwoodsman who died at the Alamo.  Of all places associated with the Revolutionary War, perhaps none is more revered than Valley Forge, Pennsylvania. For it was here, over two centuries ago, that America faced its darkest hour and its greatest challenge. Yet no military battles were fought here. During the winter of 1777-78, thousands of soldiers died in the snowy encampment. Today, more than 4-million people visit the Valley Forge National Historical Park. We examine the archaeological excavations and building preservation.
His explorations opened up the New World to Europe, but the determined explorer died a broken man, stripped of his rightful glory, titles and money. Christopher Columbus wanted to find a new route to Asia, but became the first European to set foot on the New World. Evidence now proves that the Vikings were there long before him, but even in his own time later explorers usurped his glory! BIOGRAPHY® uses period accounts, rare art and artifacts and interviews with world-renowned historians to tell Columbus's often-reinterpreted story. See how he convinced Ferdinand and Isabella to fund his journey and how he never gave up believing that he had reached Asia. Discover how his fortunes and reputation sank so quickly that by the time of his fourth voyage Spanish officials would not let him anchor in their waters. From the dream that led him across the horizon to the fortunes that deserted him and the ongoing controversy over his true place in history, this is the dramatic story of Christopher Columbus. The story of the men who forged the nation comes alive through their own words and writings in this DVD set. Their signatures line the documents that are the blueprints for our most hallowed institutions, their accomplishments are at the heart of history books, and their faces stare out at us from our currency. But the heroes who created our country were people, and their humanity is often obscured by the veils of time. This moving program uses their own words and writings--given voice by actors James Woods, Brian Dennehy, Burt Reynolds, Michael York and others--to help us understand the men who forged the nation. From the first stirrings of discontent to independence and the ratification of the Constitution, FOUNDING FATHERS reveals the personalities behind the legends and offers an intimate take on the pivotal events in the creation of the nation. The four episodes (on 2 DVDs) in this extraordinary set are: Rebels...With a Cause Taking Liberties You Say You Want a Revolution A Healthy Constitution

Roanoke Colony
It was supposed to be the first permanent English settlement in the New World. It became one of the most enduring, tantalizing mysteries in American history.

In 1587, a ship with 117 English men, women and children arrived in what is now the Outer Banks of North Carolina to start the first British colony in the New World. But they would enter history as one of the most tantalizing mysteries of early America.

Three years after leaving the settlement, Governor John White returned from what was supposed to be a six month supply trip to find the colony gone. Nothing remained but five chests of books and papers buried in the sand and a post with the word "Croatoan" carved on it. White knew Croatoan as an Indian village, but problems with his ship forced him to return to England without seeing if the Roanoke colonists had ventured there.

LOST COLONY OF ROANOKE explores the possible fate of the vanished settlement. Were they killed by disease, storms, or possibly even Spanish adventurers? Did they abandon the coast and settle in the mountains? Persistent rumors link a reclusive group known as the Melungeons to the lost colony. Did they mingle with the Native Americans?

From far-fetched theories to an underwater archaeological expedition going on today, this is a fascinating look at one of the most enduring mysteries in American history.

Relive the battles and commands that made Washington the natural choice to be 'Father of the Country.' Scholars reflect on how Washington's reputation was forged in combat. Visit the sites of some of the Revolution's most important battles. A comprehensive look at Washington's long military career. The George Washington we all know is larger than life, an icon of mythic proportions. But before becoming the "Father of his country," he was a soldier. This in-depth portrait of this "other" Washington begins in 1753, when the 21-year-old obtained an officer's commission in the Virginia militia. His stint there was far from an overwhelming success. Though he retired from the militia in 1758, he continued to hone his leadership skills managing his vast Mount Vernon estate. When America declared independence, Washington was the consensus choice to lead the Continental Army, and the faith placed in the Virginia farmer was, ultimately, richly rewarded. From the fields where he courted disaster as a young officer to the true story of the fabled crossing of the Delaware, WASHINGTON THE WARRIOR is an unforgettable look at the career of the most important commander in American military history.
LEGENDS OF THE OLD NORTHWEST
From the man who formed America's first special forces to battles with British, French and Indians, this set explores the stories and legends of the early frontier. Includes 'Roger's Rangers'; 'Pontiac's Rebellion'; 'Long Knives'; 'Tecumseh.' To most Americans, the word "frontier" conjures up the sagebrush sagas of the Wild West. But before the young nation got that far, the Mississippi was the border of the great unknown, and the frontier was the Great Lakes area of the Midwest. FRONTIER: LEGENDS OF THE OLD NORTHWEST tells the oft-overlooked tales of adventurers, warriors and conflicts that shaped the nation in the late 18th century. Trace the many battles fought by Native Americans against the French, British, Spanish and Americans. Dramatic re-enactments at historic sites, expert commentary, authentic period artifacts and journals are all used to recreate the incredible events of the era that some historians have dubbed "America's true first world war," when forces of Europe's great powers, the fledgling United States and Native Americans fought one another for ascendancy in the New World. The four volumes in this comprehensive set are: Roger's Rangers the story of America's first special forces and the unorthodox leader who forged them. Pontiac's Rebellion examine the Native American resistance of 1763, led by the Ottawa war chief, Pontiac. Long Knives The improbable saga of George Rogers Clark, who led a tiny force to a momentous victory at Vincennes, Indiana in 1799. Tecumseh: The Dream of Confederacy the tragic tale of the Shawnee warrior Tecumseh and his ill-fated attempt to lead a united last stand among the Native Americans. For a man who insisted that life on the public stage was not what he had in mind, Thomas Jefferson certainly spent a great deal of time in the spotlight--and not only during his active political career. After 1809, his longed-for retirement was compromised by a steady stream of guests and tourists who made of his estate at Monticello a virtual hotel, as well as by more than one thousand letters per year, most from strangers, which he insisted on answering personally. In his twilight years Jefferson was already taking on the luster of a national icon, which was polished off by his auspicious death (on July 4, 1896); and in the subsequent seventeen decades of his celebrity--now verging, thanks to virulent revisionists and television documentaries, on notoriety--has been inflated beyond recognition of the original person. For the historian Joseph J. Ellis, the experience of writing about Jefferson was ''as if a pathologist, just about to begin an autopsy, has discovered that the body on the operating table was still breathing.'' In American Sphinx, Ellis sifts the facts shrewdly from the legends and the rumors, treading a path between vilification and hero worship in order to formulate a plausible portrait of the man who still today ''hover[s] over the political scene like one of those dirigibles cruising above a crowded football stadium, flashing words of inspiration to both teams.'' For, at the grass roots, Jefferson is no longer liberal or conservative, agrarian or industrialist, pro- or anti-slavery, privileged or populist. He is all things to all people. His own obliviousness to incompatible convictions within himself (which left him deaf to most forms of irony) has leaked out into the world at large--a world determined to idolize him despite his foibles. From Ellis we learn that Jefferson sang incessantly under his breath; that he delivered only two public speeches in eight years as president, while spending ten hours a day at his writing desk; that sometimes his political sensibilities collided with his domestic agenda, as when he ordered an expensive piano from London during a boycott (and pledged to ''keep it in storage''). We see him relishing such projects as the nailery at Monticello that allowed him to interact with his slaves more palatably, as pseudo-employer to pseudo- employees. We grow convinced that he preferred to meet his lovers in the rarefied region of his mind rather than in the actual bedchamber. We watch him exhibiting both great depth and great shallowness, combining massive learning with extraordinary naïveté, piercing insights with self-deception on the grandest scale. We understand why we should neither beatify him nor consign him to the rubbish heap of history, though we are by no means required to stop loving him. He is Thomas Jefferson, after all--our very own sphinx.  Available on DVD for the first time, BEN FRANKLIN is a fresh, down-to-earth, informative look at one of America's most essential human monuments. Text Extras to Include Timeline, List of Inventions, and Anecdotes ''The Many Faces of Ben Franklin'' Making-of Featurette Interactive Menus; Scene Selection ''Declaration of Independence'' episode of SAVE OUR HISTORY Inventor, writer, businessman, scientist, diplomat, and the face gracing the hundred-dollar bill — this stately figure is the Benjamin Franklin history has taught us to remember. Now, in this revealing yet informal History Channel™ presentation, the real man behind the myth is finally brought to light. By his own admission, the man who negotiated an alliance with France, helped write the Declaration of Independence and was the first to tame lightning was far from perfect. A self- promoter and occasionally ruthless competitor, this Founding Father never made a penny from his achievements and was more comfortable speaking in front of the British Parliament than he was being with his own family. Narrated in an easy, conversational tone by Edward Herrmann (Intolerable Cruelty, The Practice), BEN FRANKLIN features in- depth interviews with renowned biographers and historians, as well as reenactments shot in High-Definition video on locations in Philadelphia — a truly remarkable virtual "walk" in Franklin's footsteps.

The "self-evident" truths were intensely debated. In America's first years, Washington, Franklin, Hamilton, Jefferson, Adams, Madison and Burr struggled to transform their disparate visions into an enduring government. Based on Joseph Ellis's Pulitzer Prize® winning book, FOUNDING BROTHERS examines six moments when the collisions and collusions of these towering figures left an indelible imprint on the nation: the secret dinner that determined the site of the capital and America's financial future; Benjamin Franklin's call for an end to slavery; George Washington's farewell address to the nation; John Adams's term as president; Hamilton and Burr's famous and fatal duel, and the final reconciliation between Adams and Jefferson. Drawing on the words of the founders and incisive commentary from leading scholars, FOUNDING BROTHERS is an elegant and engaging portrait of America's origins in personal conflict and compromise.

The grandson of one of Custer's Native-American scouts tells the stories handed down to him about the battle that has become a touchstone of American history. The battle of the Little Big Horn--"Custer's Last Stand,"--has been examined and re-examined so many times that it would seem the subject has been exhausted. But LITTLE BIG HORN: THE UNTOLD STORY proves otherwise. The product of over twenty years of research by Dr. Herman J. Viola, Curator Emeritus at the Smithsonian Institution, this study draws on some of the most impressive source material imaginable, including restored footage of the first-ever reconstruction of the battle, filmed in 1908 with many of the Native Americans who took place in the real fight. The Red Horse drawings--40 vivid color portraits made by an eyewitness--offer another privileged view of the famous battle. But perhaps most intriguing are the on-camera accounts of Dr. Medicine Crow, who as a young man knew five of the six Crow scouts in Custer's employ, as well as Sioux and Cheyenne veterans of the fight. Through these authoritative accounts, kept silent and unseen for decades, a remarkably cohesive, new view of the legendary battle emerges. This is a must-have DVD for anyone who wants to know what really happened at the Little Big Horn.
