Whew! What a day! The first official day of the 2006 Great Mohican Gathering was a great success! Today we rafted the Nolichucky, and I have to say that this was the best time I've had yet on the river. The weather was nice and we had a terrific guide, who happens to love LOTM and was able to quote entire scenes right along with us. He also managed to keep everyone inside the raft; not a single person overboard in my raft.
However, the OTHER raft had some casualties. Man (and woman) overboard... I'm not naming names, but both of their names start with "D." Luckily they weren't seriously injured; just some scrapes on the legs.
Several of you were missed and thought about... you know who you are!

Tomorrow we're off to Chimney Rock, Blue Ridge Motion Picture Studio, and then dinner at Spirits on the River. By then, I think we will have earned our fry-bread sundaes.
No pics yet from today... will try to post some tomorrow night.

Just checked out the '06 Gathering photos and such. What a wonderful time we missed. I don't know if we will ever make it again but the desire to be there is strong as ever. The pics of Soldier #2 especially made me homesick for all of the wonderful Mohican people. Hopefully we will see you all again someday. Eric and Sharon, if you're ever in our area again, Perkins is on us!

To Eric,
Ha ha..... yeah that would look real authentic racing around with
your bess.
I posted the picture of you to see if anyone wouldn't know who it is.
But as you can see no one else posted.
"I" was surprised to see you pull up in something other than that big
white truck.

Hello Margie,
I'm glad you had a good time. It's too bad you didn't email me before,
I would have encouraged you to go to everything. Every day is fun and
the people are great. Next time you'll do it all....

Hello Jayne,
I'm glad you enjoyed my post. I wanted to do it right after the
gathering but things got too busy. Well better late than never.
Yes, it was nice to see you and Karen again. I wish we could have
spent time together doing more of the events. But, I'm glad to have
seen you even for the short time. And of course I remember the long
ride to Cherokee and back and how much "Fun" it was. I laughed till
I hurt. That sure was a blast. Sharing rides is one of the best
things about the gathering. I totally endorse doing it.
And no....hoover sounds faintly familiar but I can't remember.
Would you enlighten me?

Jayne Posted - July 05 2006 : 3:36:32 PM
Hi, Donna.

I enjoyed reading your memories. I believe this was the first time in five Gatherings that I missed Chimney Rock, Linville Falls, and the rafting. So it was fun to read what I missed!! (Although I can't say I really miss the duckie of 2003!)

It was good to see you once again. Will always have fun memories of you riding in our van in 2004. We had some good laughs. Remember the "Hoover"?

Hi to everyone, especially Stephanie, Erick, Donna, Kay.

This was my first gathering and I wasn't sure how it would be, so that is why I didn't schedule my time to go to more of the functions. If I had only known how wonderful everyone turned out to be, I would have stayed at the hotel and taken a week off work so that I could have gone to everything.

I thoroughly enjoyed the tour of the Blue Ridge Motion Pictures. The gentleman who showed us around, was so interesting and took time to really entertain us. His stories were very informative and I could have stayed a lot longer. However, the meal at the restaurant was good, too. All of the people at my table included me as though I had been with them all along. I appreciate that.

I look forward to the next Gathering and plan to attend everything.if at all
possible.

Another fantastic gathering has passed into memory. It was worth waiting 2 yrs for.
I’d like to specially thank all the people whose hard work made this happen.
Steph and her husband, Kay and her family, Eric and Sharon, Diana, and of course Rich for being the Father of all this. And Daire and the others who made a beautiful program guide.

It’s amazing my new roommate - April arrived at the hotel just a few minutes after me. That first night I enjoyed showing her the bloopers in the movie on my laptop. We both would have liked to have gone to Cherokee with the others but we knew it would be a late night. We rested up for the rafting.

Wednesday morning riding to USA Raft with Stephanie, Rita, Marcy, Patrick, April. It was fun seeing everyone else arrive. We all signed the waivers stating we knew this is a dangerous sport with perilous consequences. Then it was on to get geared up. I laughed as the employee tightened up my life preserver. All I could think of was Scarlet O’Hara having her corset tightened by Mammy.
I worry more about the bus ride “to” the river than riding the river. Those mountain roads are narrow and you wonder if the brakes will give out. But we made it safe once again. Then I was lucky to share the raft with the strong arms of the Dels. Thank you guys! Because of you I was able to move “my” arms the next day.
We watched in awe as the dare devils in the duckies paddled through the rapids. You haven’t really experienced the river until you do it in one of those. Bravo to those who got dumped into the river and bravely got back on and kept on going! And also to those in the large raft who went swimming too. We sure did some screaming. When the guides decided to “surf” in the rapids we had to “go for it”. We had a blast.

Thursday morning meeting with everyone at the Chimney Rock pavilion.
I was a lucky winner. My program guide had a blue megaphone sticker in it, which gave me a LOTM key chain. Those door prizes were fun. We had breakfast then it was up to the cliffs. We were able to all park our cars in the upper parking lot. Steph did a great job showing everyone the film sites. It was nice at the top of the falls. There were only a few other people. We just about had it to ourselves.
Later on we had our tour at the Blue Ridge Studio. He showed us all around – the sound proof room where stars come in to record their voices, the make up room, this huge room for filming with green screen, different sets, and of course the large room where the inside of the cave was filmed. There’s a hallway with lots of photos from different movies that they filmed.
It was very interesting.
Then onto Spirits on the River. Unfortunately they were out of snake, but we still enjoyed watching Michael Dennis eat things I wouldn’t touch!
Friday morning came awful early for the folks who went to the sunrise. I’ve never gone and I’m holding that record. I had the pleasure of riding with the Dels to Louise’s for breakfast. These long rides go very fast when you’re getting to know the other gatherer’s. Hearing about their jobs and what they do in their off time.
At breakfast we met Gera Girard and learned of her sewing experiences on the set of LOTM. She enjoyed telling about the hug she got from Daniel Day-Lewis. Then we were off to hike Table Rock. All the vehicles caravanned up, and the dust soon covered them all. Later on we could tell who was part of our group because of it. We had a great hike. The views were fantastic. With Eric leading the way we reached the final scene location.
Then it was back down to Louise’s for lunch. Then onto Linville Falls. The leaning tree is still there. The Dels staged their own attack wearing their period clothing. Eric re-told all his stories of filming there. I especially like the one he tells about director Michael Mann directing one scene behind a plate of plexiglass. All the soldiers pointed their guns at him ready to shoot.
Which isn’t exactly what he wanted them

I just wanted to say "Thank you" to everyone for sharing your Gathering tales and photos. They were the next best thing to actually being there.

The Dels were awesome. Thanks for killing/scalping me. I just wish the knife wasn’t reversed though.

Speaking as a nervous mom when it comes to her son getting scalped, THANK YOU DEL for using the blunt end of the knife. Michael might like "realism", but I prefer to have my son in one piece!!! Here is my baby getting a haircut the hard way.

Hello everyone,

This is Michael. I just wanted to stop by and tell everybody what a blast I had at the gathering. I made a lot of friends, the likes of which I hope to see at future gatherings. I want to commend Stephanie on the fantastic job she did putting all of this together. There wasn’t one event I attended that I didn’t thoroughly enjoy. They were all great, especially Table Rock. I also want to thank Eric for the honor of letting me wear the infamous Soldier #2 costume (^_^)V. BTW Eric, make sure to tell Sierra I still have the drum (she’ll know what I mean). April, I’m glad you were there. We had similar interests, which made the long drives that much easier (minus that one song you played). Sorry I haven’t sent the pics yet I’m lazy. Donna was nothing short of a riot. Plus she has been to every gathering, so she was quite knowledgeable. The Batliners were a trip. It seems that Brian conquered his fear on Triple Falls. Why is it that all high school science teachers are so nice? Nancy your students are extremely lucky to have you as a teacher. Marcy, my fellow daredevil. I wish you could have stayed for the whole trip. I'll have to study up on Shakespeare so I can get your jokes . The Dels were awesome. Thanks for killing/scalping me. I just wish the knife wasn’t reversed though. Diana, you were BORN in Japan. How cool is that. I’m definitely envious. I wish I could have gotten to know everyone a little better. I’m somewhat shy sometimes. I also regret missing out on the rafting. It sounded like you guys had a blast. Well thanks again everyone for such a great trip.

Finally getting a minute to reflect on another unique gathering. Each and every gathering has been different for me. Different schedules, different folks, different weather, each has had its own feel and personality.

It was a bit odd during the planning stages, seeming a bit slippery without the Sachem’s guidance and plodding away at details. Without Rich’s lead, I don’t think anyone could have done a better job than Stephanie did. She was the little engine that could and she pulled off a fantastic Gathering Lite! After many phone calls, miles on the road, and moments of uncertainty – we all have an enriched appreciation for the planners that have gone before us! Amazing effort and result Steph!! AWESOME job on the raffle and auction Kay!!!! We weren’t sure how much Eric was going to be with us, but he too sacrificed time and work to be his magnificent usual Mohican Guide Deluxe!! THANKS for your time and heart, Eric! Sharon, you ALWAYS do such a marvelous job on the T-shirts and the polos this year were quite a hit!!!! Thanks so much for your hard work and last minute order handling – which you always do so agreeably!!!

And thanks to all who ventured back to MohicanLand to experience the beauty and magic of a gathering again and thanks to the “Virgin Gatherers”, as they became known this time, for taking a chance at jumping right into a group of folks you have never met before. I absolutely LOVE hearing all the comments from everyone’s fresh experiences of the enchantment of a Mohican Gathering we veterans have come to find irresistible! Seeing old friends, meeting new ones, all in my favorite place in the world – what can be better than that?

I have been to every gathering, except the first one (I found the site THE DAY of the first gathering), including the UnGathering of 2002 (no official gathering that year being the first after 9/11/01), but this was the first one where I didn’t do every single activity due to my recent knee surgery and being out of shape from no exercise this spring (waiting on that knee surgery). It was just plain NO FUN – except for the excellent company of Karen and Gera – to miss out on the trekking of those trails! I’ll be back in 2008!

The Dels – Oh What a Niiight, late December back in ’63….. – OH WAIT that’s The DELLS – not OUR Dels! It was great to have you two for the entire gathering and I will be forever indebted to you for your gentlemanly assistance on our rafting adventure! Lil Del – I gotta say it just one more time “SORRY!”

Gera (and Don and Devon) – WHAT A TREAT to have you with us!!!! You are such a precious lady with a contagious spirit. Great to meet your family too!

Sarah Z! How fun to see you again! You are just as sweet as ever and that smile of yours is still awesome! We missed ya Sunday!

Jayne and Karen – My Indiana Girls!!!! You two are always such a highlight to my gatherings and every other time I am lucky enough to visit with you! Love y’all!!!!

Donna – the quintessential gatherer and just downright cool gal! I don’t know if that trip from Vermont is worth it to you, but it SURE is for us!!!!

Nancy – I sure am glad you skipped out of school early. It was very nice getting to spend more time with you!!! What a life saver you were this year!!

AND HOW COOL to have Fitz for the whole gathering – WAIT – where were you Wednesday???? You are always so interesting to talk to and thanks so much for your assistance this year!!!

OH YOU BATLINERS!!!! What fun you two are! I am SO GLAD you joined us this year…and Bailey too! Has she enjoyed her movies?? Thanks for driving so far to join us – this gathering was extra special because you both were with us! Favorite Brian quote (and there were plenty) “Fitz, you remind me of Higgins on Magnum P.I., I can’t wait to meet Higgins one day so I can tell him he reminds me of Fitz!” I always knew Fitz reminded me of someone, but couldn’t put my finger on it – THAT’S IT! EUREKA!!! Thanks!

Stephanie,
It certainly looks like you put on one amazing shindig!!!! Good on you! The weather looks like it was super (unlike that rainy days Gathering awhile back.....)and the events looked wonderful (except that river run...wouldn't get me on a "rubber ducky" for all the tea in China; or a great latte). Thanks for mailing me the program guide, you all did a GREAT job on that one. I am meeting up with Sarah Z. to retreive my tee shirt; thanks to Eric and sister Sharon for bending the rules for me. And to those who don't know my sisters and I, we are not party animals (we're way to old for that...!!) we just like to have a little fun....and what more fun is there than a Gathering???? Love looking at the pics; thanks to everyone for posting them.
To all of my friends, hello, and to the newbies; welcome. You've found a great site.

Kay, you mentioned that Michael had given you a few gray hairs... why do you hate the gray hairs?

Steph,
When the gray hair is gone, Kay will see the roots are wiped out forever.
Sorry for butchering the line, but it's the best that I can do.

Is it 2008 yet???
It will get here before we know it!!!

Love,
Kay

Somebody ask Sharon how to type that symbol for "flapping your jaws" that she taught me.
Seriously, Eric, even though I tried to scout the trails beforehand, there is no way we could have found the non-trail at Table Rock without you. Thanks so much for being our guide.
And I hardly cleared any rocks out of the way... just ask Patrick and his fractured foot! Sorry Patrick!
And let's just get this straight about those tables... the owners knew I was borrowing them they just got the weekends mixed up. Good grief, make me sound like a thief!!

Sorry that my earlier picture of Michael wouldn't post. I still can't get it to work after several attempts. Kay, you mentioned that Michael had given you a few gray hairs... why do you hate the gray hairs?
Is it 2008 yet???
Steph

P.S. Eric, I love your "awards" and I agree with them all! Jayne, your memories were well written and I enjoyed reading them and remembering. Brian and Carolyn, I miss you guys already. I'm dying to know if you went down sliding rock. It was kind of cloudy Monday so I figured you'd be COLD if you went. I want pictures if you did!!!

Yes its me! I was told I wouldnt read the board so I wanted to prove her wrong. HA! I hate to be told I wouldnt do something. You remember that Steph. :)

So many folks thank me, yet thanks is only needed from me to you. If it were not for you, all that I have experenced would be lost. Thanks be to those who keep it going. Stephanie, Kay, Diana, Sarah Z., Jo, Rich, and a special thanks to the newbies. I love to see their faces when I tell the tales that they have only heard from the old timers. Thanks be to those who travel. I live here and feel you come to visit my home. Makes me want to cry.... NAW........ P A R T Y!!!! Rich, ol friend, you were missed more than anyone. Not counting the Sweeter sisters. Sorry buddy but you have to admit they are the ultra party animals. You hear that girls????? OHHHHH BTW I move that a honorary sister now be added to the Sweeters. Marcy! Do I have a second? Gara gets the 35th Regt. of Foot best trooper award. Nancy, the peacemaker award. Brian, the most improved virgin award, Lil Michael, honorary Soldier # 2 for this year. Tammy, the Jack Russel Terrer award. (NO! Shes not a dog, its the HYPER award folks. Geesh!) Big Del for best rubbing bear grease all over your chest in front of a crowd award (NO! That did nothing for ME, buddy but the girls loved it.), April for best mothering award. Donna, best supporting Soldier #2 award, Sharon, best putting up with Soldier #2's endless; rambling, wanding off, talking without signing and all around best T and polo shirt award. Someone actually said that I rambled! How rude! Can you believe that. Who would think such a thing to say that I.... ME....Soldier #2 would ramble on and on endlessly about things. Oh? Where was I. What was my point? Oh yes.... and to Stephaine, the GREATEST short person award. For organizing this shindig. (thats a new word April. Look it up.) For going at it alone to walk the trails beforehand, to clear the trails of all the rocks that may prevent our passage. For taking the tables that we eat upon without letting the owners know. For being the taxi mom. For running around on 3 hours sleep.... For.. For....For taking the day off after its all over just so you walk into work refreshed like you actually had a good time. (This is that rambling part she was talking about, aint it?) THANK YOU! From the bottom of my heart and all the others bottoms too. (thats hearts folks. OMG folks pleeeeease. Work with me here!) Thank you Stephaine. Ya done good. :) Doedagin! Bechacan! (Those are WNC words April they aint in the dictionary. Sorry.)
See ya'uns,
Eric

Greetings all,

I too made it back all in one piece. I took my time getting back to Northern VA. I got back Monday afternoon. The doctor who took my initial X-ray of my left foot, said I did not fracture it. However, I saw a foot doctor this morning for confirmation. He told me I did fracture it. Luckily, it is a bone that normally heals itself after 5-6 weeks. So now, I am wearing a shoe boot most of the time. Anyways, it was unfortunate this I had to miss the Table Rock hike and the hikes to the waterfalls. I still had a great time. It was a pleasure to see a number of old faces as well as meeting plenty of new people. Thanks to Stephanie, Diana, Sarah, and Eric for making it a great Gathering. Cannot wait till 2008.

With Honor,

Patrick
