I gotta say, it seems mighty strange to be writing about a Mohican Gathering in late April and not have it be just a few weeks off. For the best, this particular time, I do still feel.

However, plans for the 2004 shindig have really taken off! Even though I cautioned against signing up till you're fairly certain you can actually be here, quite a few went ahead & took the plunge ... so, I have to think y'all are entertaining serious plans! Good! Quite a group shaping up ... including a number of folks from Gathering I.

Also, other pieces are falling into place:
  • Soldier #2 is on board
  • Tim Cordell is once again planning to do his Days of Infamy presentation
  • H. David Wright might be in attendance!
  • Many of the required facilities have already been placed on "stand-by" and are enthusiastic

It is shaping up as a truly GRAND experience ... You'll pretty much see it all, locations-wise, and extras are pouring in. It'll be a bit more expensive, naturally, due to the length & added activities, but ought not to be too bad, considering. I'd say, though, to start your planning [and saving] early.

About the itinerary ... [subject to change & rearranging. In fact, this represents my latest thoughts & varies just a bit from what is posted on the 2004 Gathering Page - I'll adjust that in the near future.]

Sunday: Chimney Rock Park is an ideal place to kick-off the Gathering. It's perfect for meeting, getting orientated, and distributing stuff ... so, it's a lock for opening day. Plus, it offers breakfast! Oh, and there's virtually no driving to get there, for those who stay in Chimney Rock Park [usually the vast majority] & there's a reasonable start time [9AM]. This makes it a good choice when considering folks just traveled large distances to get here. The only problem I see is that the place gets crowded on weekends. It shouldn't be bad in the morning, but it will get congested by lunchtime. We've done it on Sunday before, though, and survived! One complaint we began receiving after the first couple of Gatherings was that it shouldn't be all-day ... so, we're including the trail lunch as part of the package, and offering options for the second half of this day ... you can stay at the Park, use it as free time to swim, shop, relax, whatever ... or accompany me up north of Asheville to explore The Elk Hunt & Tracking the War Party in Pisgah National Forest. Space is a bit tight up there - not conducive to large groups - so this is a good opportunity to offer an alternative activity [as so often is requested]. We shouldn't be back very late, and that's a good thing, 'cause the next morning is ...

Monday: ... an early Sunrise & an all-day exploration of the sites in and around Linville Gorge ... and there are many. It's a grueling, long day, but well worth it - and central to the filming. This a day to get to know Soldier #2 - he gets to shine in the Gorge! The Opening & Closing Vistas, The Escort, The Ambush, Lake George & Fort William Henry [site of], The Final Scene ... more! From the pre-dawn darkness, hot thermos of coffee in hand, through the beautiful trails & sights, to the stillness of the lake, evening glow reflecting off its waters - a superb "bonding" day not to be missed!

Tuesday: After this somewhat difficult day, a leisurely Day at Biltmore Estate is in order. Again, a not-so-early start time, and no strenuous activity. Here, you'll see parts of Albany & The Burial Ground, eat a spectacular buffet lunch at the elegant Deer Park Restaurant, and then get to tour the mansion at your leisure ... We did this once before only. It was a big hit! We are considering lining up dinner at the nearby Spirits on the River. Relax, 'cause the next day is ...

Wednesday: ... a real killer! All-day river ride

Rich, you mention that the only Mohican relation to Cherokee would be the Indian culture....let's not forget that Wes Studi is Cherokee, so there's your six degrees.

Hi Rich!

Sounds like a superb itinerary...The Sabbath starts sbout 8:30
around June '04, so if we start the movie at 5-5:30 & finish at
about 7:30, I could get back to Chimney Rock on time.......

Does this sound at all reasonable?

Thanks.

Best to you and yours,
Ariel

P.S. I could, as before, bring the interesting "Politically Incorrect" episode w/ Wes and Russell. Also, I have all the tapes of "Frontier: Legends of the Old Northwest" and a bit fuzzy TV copy of
"Frontier: The Decisive Battles".

I found the George Rogers Clark episode particularly meaningful.
Quality Television...for once.

I've thought about this for quite awhile, Ariel, and have come to several conclusions. One of them is that this is a doable proposition, based on the time we generally wrap up at Dupont. Not sure it would suit the group in general, though, as it would make the whole evening less relaxing. Normally, folks go "freshen" up & get a bite to eat after Dupont & before the movie. Or they go to the theater & mingle, drink a beer, order some pizza, etc., all before the movie begins ... Also, Soldier #2 addresses the group there, etc. This takes some time.

However, the real caveat in your suggestion would most probably come from the theater itself. One of the reasons we start when we do is because that's the earliest they can get us in after the previous show of whatever they are playing. In order to accommodate your idea, we'd more than likely need to rent out 2 time slots, an expensive proposition at best. I will feel out the theater on this, but I wouldn't get my hopes up.

:(
