Has anyone seen the ads for this one? I wasn't even aware of it until I was watching a program on the History Channel (about the U.S.S. Constellation) a couple of weeks ago and saw the trailer. I am definitely going to see this one in the theater.
What is it about? The song? Yes... partly. But mainly, it is the story of William Wilberforce, the British abolitionist who was responsible for steering anti-slave legislation through the British Parliament in the late 18th century. The film also recounts the story of John Newton, a reformed Slaver Captain, who wrote the song.
The film has an excellent cast, with Ioan Gruffudd (A & E's Horatio Hornblower) playing Wilberforce. (Hey, Scott! Do I have your attention?) Albert Finney plays Newton.
For those of you who are familiar with our Revolutionary War period, Col. Banastre Tarleton reappears as Sir Banastre Tarleton, a member of Parliament. The movie apparently portrays him as opposing the ban on the slave trade. True? I don't know.
This sounds like a good one and I am anxious to see it. Amazing Grace

Sorry. Back again! I just watched the trailer, and this looks like an excellent movie. I think I spotted Ciaran Hinds in the trailer, too. It definitely has promise. Now if only a theater near me were showing it! |

Yes, Mr. Hinds plays the aforementioned Tarleton. BTW, he was "affectionately" called Bloody Ban during the Revolution, apparently with good reason. Sounds like his reputation didn't improve any while in Parliament, it this portrayal is accurate.
I was worried it wasn't going to show in Binghamton... much like "The New World" and "Prairie Home Companion." But, it is! Maybe if it does well, it will go into a wide release. |

| I think a nice relaxing evening at the theater watching this movie sounds real good to me for tonight, as well. Think I'll catch the 7:30 show. |

I went, I saw, I enjoyed. This is a wonderful movie that makes you come away feeling very, very good, and very, very glad that there have been people throughout history who fought -- endlessly -- for something they truly believed in... and won.
My boy Ioan has done it again. This is his best, by far. (Sorry, Mr. Scott "Yangese." I will book no argument on this one!) Everything about this movie is quite well done, in my opinion. All of the acting is excellent; the script is well written and easy to follow; the costumes, wigs (plus the shorn heads underneath) and hairstyles are just about as perfect as they can be, to the best of my knowledge. Seamus, a very nice banyan was worn by a doctor in one scene! No cap, because he had just gotten out of bed and threw his banyan on over his shirt. Nice, nevertheless. The sets look really period correct, including the interior of a slaver. The big kitchen in William Wilberforce's house is to die for!
If you enjoy anything about the 18th century (albeit the latter part) or enjoy stories about good people doing good things, go see this movie. Drive a few miles, if you have to. You will laugh and you will cry. You will most certainly be very moved. |

This is a great synopsis of what William Wilberforce was all about. He is truly a man Britain should be proud of, and so should the rest of the world.
"William Wilberforce (1759-1833) led the twenty-year fight to end the British slave trade, a victory now regarded as... [some words apparently missing but I should think "monumental" would be a good one]. He finally succeeded in March 1807 and continued to fight for abolition until, days before his death in 1833, he saw the institution of slavery abolished throughout the British colonies. Not limiting himself to just abolitionist work, he dedicated his life to what he called his "two great objects": abolishing slavery in the British Empire and what he called "the reformation of manners [society]." To this end, he advocated for child labor laws, campaigned for education of the blind and deaf, and founded organizations as diverse as the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) and the National Gallery (of Art). "Good causes," it has been said, "stuck to him like pins to a magnet."
- Wilberforce biographer and Amazing Grace lead historical consultant, Kevin Belmonte
Another quote I saw stated the Wilberforce did, nearly singlehandedly, something in England that took another 50 years and a Civil War to accomplish in America.

I've just gotten back from the theater. The entire cast was excellent, but Ioan Gruffudd did a *phenomenal* job! And to think, the last thing I saw him in was "Fantastic 4"...!
Amazing Grace was definitely a step in the right direction! Go see it...and bring friends with you.

Saw it last night.....Boy, am I glad I went!! I, too, came away, WW, "feeling very, very good, and very, very glad that there have been people throughout history who fought -- endlessly -- for something they truly believed in... and won."
However, while I think "Wilbur" was fantastic, I still have heart palpatations for the gorgeous redheaded gal, he finally wised up and married! She is absolutely haunting!!!! (Kinda know now what some of you young gals are feeling for Uncas!)If she followed me home, I'd keep her, for sure.
Yep, spotted the banyan.......nice! Wait until you see MY new one...sometime this summer, maybe at Custaloga Town (that's the target date).....heheheheh! The Banyan Wars will be heating up again, for sure, with this new one on the block.
Loved the pipe band at the end, too. I have seen the Black Watch Pipe Band twice in the last five years, and am in deep awe. I guess that's because 1) they are so good, and, 2) I portray a Black Watch Grenadier in my Rev war life, and the emotional connection is there.

Told ya, didn't I?
I'm very glad you enjoyed it, Seamus. Oh... and just to make your heart go pitty-pat and to show the others what you are talking about, here is Romola Garai in her role as Barbara Spooner. You are right. She is absolutely gorgeous!

Forgot to mention...
I also loved the pipe band playing Amazing Grace at the end. I was very close to tears from the emotion of the end of the story, and then to have that follow was more than I could handle. You see, Amazing Grace was one of Gary's favorite hymns, and two versions of it were played at his Memorial Service. One version was the bagpipe version.
I have seen the both Black Watch and the Royal Highland Fusiliers over the years. There is absolutely nothing that is more "deeply stirring to the blood" than a full bagpipe band marching back and forth as they play inside a large enclosed arena. Wow. |

Thanks for the pics WW and my favorite hymn is also Amazing Grace. When I go I want it played at my funeral. My brother-in-law plays the bagpipes and anytime he comes for a visit I always have him play that tune for me. Just love it. He plays at weddings and funerals and is really good. I agree that a marching band with bagpipes and all the rest, there is nothing to compare.

Just watched the trailer, and this looks like a truly good movie. I'll have to make a forward note in my diary though, doesn't come out until June down here. Thanks for bringing it to my attention WW.
How lucky are you Seamus to have seen the Black Watch Pipe Band twice!! I'm sooo jealous. And you too WW - to have seen Black Watch and the Royal Highland Fusiliers. I would walk 100 miles through the freezing snow to see a bagpipe band! How lucky are you IG to have a family member that plays. I wouldn't be missing any of your family gatherings! I was fortunate enough to be invited to our "International Police Tattoo" dress rehearsal last year, where the New York Police Dept Emerald Society Pipes and Drums played, along with numerous other wonderful pipe bands. One of the highlights of my year! (and I didn't have to walk thru the snow to see them either)
Nice pic WW. Ioan Gruffudd's definitely a looker. |

Great movie! Even my husband was impressed, and he was initially not jumping for joy at the prospect of seeing it. Wonderful performances, inspiring story, and as WW said, everything looks period correct, and very attractively so. Did you notice that enormous cupboard in the kitchen, WW? Gorgeous! Your boy Ioan did indeed do a fine job. Since I've only seen him in two roles, as William Wilberforce and as Lancelot in "King Arthur," he's now typecast as a hero in my mind. Wonder if he'll do anything darker in future? And while it's very unforgiving of me, I was glad to learn that Tarleton left a few fingers behind in America!
P.S. That redhaired girl did show to good advantage in the fashions of the time. |
