Joy, have you read Joe and Rich's interpretation? Hawkeye instantly recognizes that Magua has lead them the long way around, so as to set them up for massacre, and that's what the smirk is about. This also makes sense, huh? I'ts probably a combination of both (what you said and what Joe said).

Yes, they were dressed for a pleasant "outing" at first, weren't they - pearl earrings and all.
