Just read an article in today's Milwaukee Journal. An archaeologist named David Starbuck got to the bottom of the 30 foot well built with the fort in 1775. He did ths in September. Not an easy task as the well is only 3 feet across. He found no human skeletons or treasure. He did find a trove of musket balls, French gun flints, pottery shards, and piles of sunglasses. The latter being among the layers of 20th. century Americana, probably deposited by people yeilding to the human urge to toss things into wells. This was a summer project sponsered by nearby Andirondack Community College. Starbuck said it showed no signs of being deliberatly trashed or polluted. Accounts at the time of the attack at the fort numbered deaths at around 1,000 but historians today say the death toll was no more than 200. Kathy
