Hi, Lynne. Like Neuromancer, I think pinpointing the beginning of Cora and Hawkeye's love is difficult.
I think you've got a point there, when you say his checking her out in the glade might have been more lust than love. That was right after she pretty much revealed herself to him by telling him her experience so far had been more stirring to her blood.... (phew!). So I think he was responding to that, BUT he had also appreciated that she had gotten hold of a gun and was willing to help defend the party as the Ottawa approached -- I love when he notices that she's got that gun...the surprise on his face. So I think his appreciation of her guts, plus the fact that she had even bothered to come over and find out more about him, combined with her disclosure to him of her underlying feelings, got the ball rolling.
Then, after they enter the fort and cross the open area headed for Munro's quarters, as her father guides them into his room, she looks back longingly at him....as though she doesn't want to be separated from him, and wants him to know it. And by the way, he looks back... and then when they're inside, as Heyward says "these men came to our aid" she looks at Hawkeye again, and he at her....those looks speak much!
Then later, when he comes in to get some cloth for wadding (is that the right word?) as she's stitching up Uncas: when I see him approach the door, and stand there awaiting permission to enter...THAT right there seems to indicate something! I feel like at that point their relationship has risen to another level. The entire exchange at that point, his respectful entry, his asking quietly for the cloth, her response, is positively CHARGED with the tension of their attraction for each other, don't you think?
By the way, here's a question for ya:
Do you think, if Cora hadn't revealed her feelings to him in the glade, he would have pursued her anyway?
Love this discussion!
