: I think most of you are forgetting who the real hero of this movie and the novel is.
: Uncas is by far the power house of this movie, and for that matter a poorly written book by Fenimore Cooper.
: Uncas is the man....He makes the movie happen....The scene at the end is worth a more than a thousand movies
: Michael Mann should make a sequal or something like Deerslayer, or Pathfinder.
I agree with you in part. Uncus is the hero of the novel but not of the movie despite the fact he has the most powerful scene. That I think was the main plot weakness of LOTM-- its not about the last of the Mohicans. Its about Hawkeye and Cora. The audience is never informed of why there are only two Mohicans left. I feel Michael Mann should have developed this storyline more fully. He could have made an even greater emotional impact with Uncus' death by truly building up the fact that he was the LAST hope for the survival of his people.
I have met people who have watched this film once or twice (shocker of shockers!) and came away from the movie not knowing the names of the Mohican characters. Uncus and Chingachgook are secondary characters in a movie whose title is about them. Also I have met cynical types who are confused by the end of the movie when for ten minutes the plot centers around Uncus and Alice who throughout most of the movie are pretty much minor characters in the stories of the romance between Haweye and Cora and Magua' revenge against Munro.
I love Uncus' final scenes as much as anyone but he was not the driving force of this movie. Its a shame that his story was not developed more but its still a great movie. The title of the film is the secondary plot; but a possible title for the real storyline "Cora and Hawkeye" just does not have a ring to it like "The Last of the Mohicans."
