I agree about the waterfall scene where Hawkeye promises to find Cora "no matter how long it takes.. no matter how far". Then they way they look at each other before he runs into the waterfall as if trying to memorize the other's face. A magical moment. A couple more moments that I love.. when they are on their way to the Fort and the spend the night in the forest. When he talks to her about the the moon and the sun and the intimate way he talks to her and the way he looks at her.. he's obviously "making love" to her(in the Victorian sense of the term" Plus the way he lays in the grass and gazes at the stars make you feel how comfortable he is with his life, with the natural world. I thought the physical performance of Daniel Day-Lewis in this film was phenomenal. Not just that he buffed up so well but the way he moved so gracefully and surely through the forest. I loved even watching his back as he ran away from the camera.
Another favorite moment is at the end of the film when Chingachcook (spelling?) and Hawkeye are gazing out to the horizon and saying goodbye to Uncas. Cora stands respectfully by and then comes up to him and they gaze at each other for the longest time as if silently conversing. Then they both imperceptibly nod to each other. I love that moment, I want to know what they are thinking about their future together. After seeing the film, I longed for another film (I know that's not possible but I can dream.) in which we get to go along as they start their life together. Where do they go. Does Cora abandon her "civilized" life in London and go off with Hawkeye and make beautiful, black haired babies?
Any thoughts on this anyone?
