The major....Like all of us, he was shaped by his upbringing and
his environment. When confronted by an entirely different environment his old paradigms would not work....to his credit after some difficulty understanding....he did learn. We see he
beginning of that with his discussion with the Colonel regarding the attack on the cabin.....and see also his prior paradigms conflicting. In the end....he understood full well that the Hurons would have their due of one of them.....I would like to think that his love for Cora and his respect for Hawkeye and his
acceptance of what they shared left him no other choice but to accept his place in the fire in their stead.

: Okay, Titanic fits right in here! Fateful voyage, romance, action,...... sounds like our man Duncan!

: No one has mentioned the good major in a while. So, was he really a pompous jerk? Or an honorable, loyal, nationalistic Brit who showed in the end what he was made of?

: I say he had a few admirable qualities!
