: :  One of our tribal justices has recently published a book, "A Hundred Miles of Bad Road," which details his two tours of duty in Viet Nam.  Dwight Birdwell is a national treasure as far as our tribe is concerned--after growing up dirt poor in a small Cherokee community in eastern Oklahoma, he enlisted and served his country extremely well, earning two silver crosses and a purple heart, among other awards.  He then went on to law school, began a law practice and eventually wound up as the Chief Justice of our Judicial Appeals Tribunal (analagous to the Supreme Court of the U.S.)  
: : We are extremely proud of him, as you might imagine.  I'm sorry, but I can't think of the publisher's name, but the book is printed by one of the major ones and is in hardback.  The mini moving wall memorial is coming here in about a week and he'll be doing another booksigning.  The signings at our local Waldenbooks have all sold out!  Anyway, sorry to gush, and sorry if someone has already mentioned this, but it might be good reading for those who want to know more about Indians in the military.

: : : and with our Special Forces there were Native Americans in our ranks.  They seemed to gravitate into the elite forces....and were welcome and instinctive warriors.  Those units I have mentioned are entirely volunteer...we used to say you had to volunteer three times......to join, to become airborne qualified,
: : : and to become SF qualified.  Of course, our military is entirely volunteer these days so anybody within military ranks is a volunteer now.
