It's rather loose & just hanging there...or perhaps, more romantically, Uncas braided it for her in the cave! There's an explanation I like, even if it isn't what happened! ;o)

The romantic explanation was always my favorite. Or maybe she braided it herself in the cave to identify further with Uncas.
