: My dad (in all his "wisdom") says that the LOTM movie does not follow the book very well. Having never read the book, I was wondering what you all had to say about that. Now remember, this is not MY opinion, but my dad's!

Parker,

Father knows best, they say, but............. The LOTM movie, though in some ways VERY different from the original story, does still follow it fairly well. According to Michael Mann, it is 1/3 Cooper original, 1/3 Philippe Dunne '36 screenplay, and 1/3 Mann. (I think it's a bit more than 1/3 Cooper!) The basic story is the same and most of the major characters are the same. Much of the film's dialogue is taken directly from the book. The greatest character changes are perhaps that of Hawkeye (not at all like DDL's portrayal) and the Cora/Alice reversals (Cora loves Uncas, Cora dies, Alice loves Duncan, Alice lives).

We've got some musings on the similarities and differences in our Musings section. We've also started pairing the script scenes with correlating scenes from Cooper's book. You can find these in the Script section.

What is the opinion of others here?
