Any comments from anyone who has read the book would be welcome. Is it just as good as the movie.

: Hi Betty,
: I loved the book! I did my senior English thesis in high school(Bill's not the only preppie here) on LOTM and The Deerslayer. Even managed to sucker my mother into typing it for me. Cooper's writing style is rather flowery and can be difficult to get into. I have to admit I'm probably one of the 10 people in the country that actually enjoyed reading his books. The book does give more detail and some things are different in the book than in the movie. Comparisons of the book and the film are on this site somewhere. It definitely is not "light" reading, but is worth a try. Go for it!

: Carol

Betty,
As one of the remaining 9 (???) people who enjoy Cooper's tales, I second Carol's advice to read the book. Though Cooper's style is VERY flowery and he certainly wasn't an advocate of getting to the point, "The Leatherstocking Tales" are fascinating. There's lots of interesting details and subtle, clever allusions that can get you thinking. There are differences from the film, but there are also some scenes that are Cooper.... verbatim.

We have the script with some of Cooper's correlating scenes. You can access them at:

Have fun reading, Betty!

(I think I'm getting an idea of how a certain unnamed person was expelled from prep school. Compare Carol's behavior to the jujube thrower.)
