: : I need some help from all you folks who are better with history than I am (actually 99.99% of the world is better with history than I am). There was a famous battle on the Western Frontier of Pennsylvania where the safety of the troops was jeopardized by the peaceful policy of the colony. In other words, the folks refused to help in the defense of their own settlement. What was the battle, and who was the General who complained that "the citizens should have supported me -- IT WAS THEIR RELIGIOUS DUTY TO DO SO!"? I have run across numerous references to it as I have dug through the history books in the last few months, but typical of me, when I want it, I can't find it again. Please help.

: Don't have a clue as to who the general was....but likely it was
: the Quakers who were the problem. A story is told that during the F&I war settlers were being burned out and killed by the scores....and asked the legislature to fund money for defense and
: militia. The Quaker legislature turned them down for reasons of not contributing to anything which would be used for violence. When the next settlement was burned out....the survivors loaded up an ox cart with their dead and traveled to Philadelphia right up to the steps of the legislature and rioted. Vowed that before another settlement was wiped out, the settlers would come to Philadelphia and wipe out the Quaker legislators....they were awarded their money for defense and militia!!! It was a pitiful sight so the story goes...women holding brained babies in their arms, their dead husbands lying in a heap on the cart.....

: Yes, it definitely was the Quakers, but there was a specific battle and a specific general associated with that particular howl of anger. Apparently most of his troops got wiped out while the saintly citizens piously looked on. I'll spend some time in the library tomorrow digging some more for it. I keep thinking it might have been either Howe or Wayne.
