: Hi, Colleen...I don't think anyone was trying to keep Eric Schweig from "competing" with Daniel Day-Lewis in this movie. The story, in the original book & in all the various film incarnations, has always centered around the character of Hawkeye. (Remember that Natty Bumppo appears in at least two more of Cooper's stories, also.) Uncas has been a secondary character from the beginning. This is not to say he isn't an IMPORTANT character, by any means...just not the main focus of the story. As for Hawkeye's character being "inexplicably" shirtless at times, I'm not sure what you mean. I remember several shirtless scenes, but all seemed pretty explicable to me. He removes his shirt while running during the elk hunt scene (I guess he's hot!), he removes it again to play the game (as does Uncas) and he's seen without it once more as the British wake him from sleep in the arrest scene. I always felt those were pretty believable times for him to be shirtless. I guess they could have let Uncas sleep shirtless, too, but maybe Eric hadn't "bulked up" to the same extent that DDL had in preparing for the role.

: I agree that they cut a lot of the scenes originally planned for Uncas & Alice, but I really think it made the film much stronger.
: While the script as originally written would have, indeed, been sexier than the final cut, it certainly would not have been more romantic, in my mind. I, for one, just love the way their love looks & feels as it stands in the finished film...both tender and tragic.

: In fact, I think everything about this film is perfect as is. I wouldn't want to see a single thing changed. But then I am a bonafide Mohican Maniac, and, therefore, extremely prejudiced! ;o)

::About the shirts I noticed that Uncas changes his shirt twice in the film:
at the beginning he wears a green shirt,at the first attack he wears a marroon-red one and changes once more at the fort with the green one;but never does Hawkeye.Uncas is certainly cleaner than Hawkeye! achch...
