Although I've never noticed Uncas running by, the explanation you've given makes sense to me. Uncas being the younger, would be a bit more able to fend off attackers in the front than Chingachgook (as spendidly strong and able as he may have been!).

Also, right after that scene one tiny thing occurs that I've always loved:
As they get down to the edge of the lake, Hawkeye takes note of a Huron rifleman on the hillside, and stops to shoot him. The victim, being of course nailed (Hawkeye's a dead aim dontcha know!) then rolls down the hill, and Chingachgook hops over him as he rolls by!! That tickles me every time!
