I never really interpreted Alice and Uncas as much of a romantic couple - most of the time it seemed like Uncas was just being noble by looking out for her. It was pretty apparent that Uncas had feelings for her but Alice was sooo clueless and scared all the time, I don't think she could have acted on her feelings. Maybe Ching. didn't approve because she was too young (the script says she was 18 but she comes across like 15 or 16). Cora and Nathaniel were a great match because they were a bit older and Cora had moxy to match Nathaniel's courage. Uncas' and Alice's deaths were tragic but they would have played better if we had seen some more concrete romantic scenes. When Alice takes her swandive, I saw it less as her jumping after her lover and more that she kind of gave up - like she knew that Magua was going to kill her eventually anyway so she died her way, by her choice.
