: :Possibly Walter Butler , of Butlersbury , in the Hudson river valley, The Mohawk Valley to be exact , the same Walter Butler who , was the leader of Butler's Rangers , and the villian of the,so called, infamous Wyoming Massacre? Am I on the right trail?
Absolutely, you are on the right trail. Good sleuthing! Major Effingham, Natty Bumppo's mentor, was either William or Walter Butler. Right now I lack two connections to make the right choice. Cooper made it clear that Effingham was called Fire-eater. Also he was the officer who made that angry complaint about the citizens not supporting him in their own defense and that it was their religious duty to do so. If I can pin one of the Butlers with both the Indian name and the quote, I have a large piece of our Musings piece on La Longue Carabine. Thanks for the input!
