I find that other than the captivity narratives, you have to read a lot of pages in order to find the littlest bit. If women are mentioned, it usually is because of someting extraordinary that happened to them, and than they are mentioned in the most offhand way. Bouquet mentions nary a one in his entire correspondence from the Forbes Expedition. He allowed three women per hundred men. The ones who worked in the hospital earned sixpence a day plus meals. Bakers got 16 pence.
