from Gayle:
After all, reaching people is what art is all about, and LOTM has accomplished that Big Time.

Well said, and I second that emotion, Gayle! Of course, I find myself agreeing with just about everything that's been said in this thread so far. I don't recall a lot of hype for the release of LOM, either. I just happened to see an advertisement, without really knowing anyone who was in it, and because of my previously established fascination with the setting/time of Cooper's tales and with their hero (it took a lot of effort to find myself enamored of Natty, but I did it!), I told myself I had to see it. Boy, was I smacked upside the head in that theatre! Yipes! The beginning of a whole new, wonderful part of my life!!!!!!!!!!

So, yes, I do believe it was seen as one of those lovely historical films, and wasn't given a whole lot promo -- I guess they thought the romantic history buffs would be a guaranteed audience, and left it at that.
