Forage in the woods was a big problem. Many traders had to abandon their horses for canoes because they were in a starving condition and worn out from carrying heavy loads.
Good idea to abandon the horse for a canoe if you happen to be near the water. But then creative woodsmen who use their rifle screws for ammo are bound to find a solution to moving pelts cross country in a canoe, no?
