: : When the party is in the canoes, escaping the massacre, right after Hawkeye yells "head for the river!", Uncas goes overboard and gets into the other canoe, with Major Heyward and another British soldier. Exactly why does he do this? Because the canoe he's in is carrying too many? Or because he sees that they need help over there?? What? I've never been able to figure this out.

: Gee, I always thought that Uncas wanted to show off how good he was at calculating at what angle he had to dive off a moving canoe and still connect with another moving canoe, and still get in with only a slight hand over the forehead to "settle back the hair" movement....and paddle on. Acutally, I think it was a manpower question; the Major needed superior help to keep up. (Besides, Uncas was very good at moving around in a canoe. He got in at the front of the canoe when they initially boarded the canoe and wound up third behind Alice with Hawkeye in the front, if you recall). Marcia, in previous postings had stated that one could dive/fall/junp out of a canoe without upsetting it, which was my first thought. But Uncas didn't leave the missing bedroll here!!! My trivia question, which I believe has gotten purged, (for all that are new to the sight) (welcome to a great sight) is what happens to the second bedroll??? Guess I'd better answer soon....(after having climbed up and down rock faces and mountain sides myself with a backpack lately, I know why these guys traveled light!!!!)

Uncas should have better let Major and Officer paddling by semselves and keep his strength to save the first canoe with women. He is so impressing paddling near Alice!
