I remember the first time I viewed my video tape at home, being shocked that there was more to that line than I had ever heard before! I actually don't think it flowed as smoothly as it could have in the shortened version...but I'm just used to watching the complete dialogue now. (and it's "rather eat and make love WITH their faces than fight..." ah, those French!)

: You are right about how much clearer everything was on the big screen. The night scenes, in particular, really looked great. I could actually see Alice crawling up to Uncas in the Glade, and I could even hear her whimpering, which I cannot hear on any of my videos.

Yes, last week in the theater, for the first time I saw Uncas whispering in Alice's ear after he grabs her and claps his hand over her mouth (be still my heart!). That was neat. I knew the script said he whispered assurances in her ear, but I'd never seen it before.

Throughout the film, I noticed much more of the little nuances of expressions on people's faces. For instance,in Gen. Webb's headquarters, I noticed the intensity of Duncan's and Webb's expressions really for the first time. I'd never REALLY seen Duncan's SNEER of contempt that way before, and, as Marcia says, Webb's eyes just glittered with animosity.

:Did you notice that you could see both Alice & Uncas lying together after their...*ahem*...UNTIMELY demises?

Yes, I think I've always tried to imagine that they were "down there somewhere" together. I am still puzzled by something, though: When Alice nears the edge and gazes down, presumably at Uncas lying dead there, and the camera shows a shot of the spot on the rocks where he's supposed to be...I CAN NEVER SEE HIM THERE! Am I looking in the wrong place or what??? Is he just too tiny to make out? It's always disturbed me. Then, after she jumps, all of a sudden, there they are together. Marcia promises to "clear it up" for me, next viewing!

In general, I have to say that I viewed the movie this time with new eyes...partly because it's been 6 years since I saw it big, and partly because of the experience of all of us sharing our passions about it over the last year or so on the board. Connecting with all of you has enriched my perceptions of the film, and for that I'm grateful. It was a wonderful viewing.

Thanks, Rich, for arranging it! I hope next year the copy isn't upside down and backwards again, though I can't imagine it would be...who else will be viewing it in the meantime??? We need our own copy!! Fresh and new...and we can care for it like a sacred relic!

love,
Myrrh
