: .....have to say that Mann probably corrected MANY inaccuracies, far-fetched impossibilities, unrealistic characterizations, and did far more justice to the tail than did Cooper.

: Bill,

: The book and the movie were completely different stories. So whose "tail" are you referring to?

: Gayle

Gayle,

That was a typo....was of course supposed to be "tale". Wasn't even a FREUDIAN typo....just fat fingers.

Figures. First post in ages and already I am in trouble again! :-)

As to the two different stories....they were and they weren't. Mann certainly twisted characters around a bit etc, but he was still telling Cooper's story.....in his own way and in a way I at least found a LOT more enjoyable. Wouldnt it have been horrible if he had kept as much the same words coming out of DDL's mouth as Cooper had coming out of Natty Bumpo's? Or tried to pass off as believable some of the incredibly unbelievable things Cooper wrote? Well, go to the site I mentioned and see what Mark Twain had to say about Cooper. Bearing in mind Mark Twain can be pretty sarcastic.....
