THX version and DDL letter

Just saw the THX and letter boxed version of LOTM. Was it just the film copy I saw, or does the THX make the movie dark? Some scenes were barely visible.
And I just read the letter DDL wrote which is part of the LOTM site. With how beautiful the movie's location must be, I cannot imagine why he says he would have "cursed" that area.
