: : : I felt their romantic connection...the protective grab in the graveyard, the look at the falls, the chivarly..etc.
: : : I must have missed something . I see no evidence ANYWHERE in the movie that shows Alice's affection towards Uncas. It is all his towards her, but nothing on her part. Yes, she does show a little emotion when he is under the knife of Magua, but nothing more then a bit. And as for her swan dive, was it because Uncas was killed? Or was it because she just could not take any more, and did not want to be in the hands of Magua?
: : :: As for the gathering, I won't be making it. I have my hopes set for next year, come HELL or high water. I want to wish you all a safe trip, and please, all of you ,have enough fun for those of us who can't make it this year. And I think if there is naked dancing around the campfire, the men also haveto participate. Only fair ya know. Love to you all. Kathy
: I know that I'm late to this discussion, but here goes, anyway. I think Alice killed herself for three reasons, in descending order of importance:
: 1. She realized that Uncas, although outnumbered, had died trying to save her. The magnitude of such a sacrifice can not be understated.
: 2. She remembered his kindness at the waterfall, and realized at least on a subconscious level, that he cared for her--regardless of whether she reciprocated that affection.
: 3. She wanted to defy Magua. It was like saying, "I know Uncas cared enough for me, that he died trying to rescue me. I can do no less than to die with him, willingly. I will cheat you of your final victory." In her final moment, she achieved maturity and clarity of thought, and truly became an adult. Besides, remember that Alice was to be burned in a sacrificial fire, anyway.
: Also, I'm still unclear about why Uncas felt he couldn't wait for his brother and father to help him, thereby increasing the chances for a successful rescue. I THINK I know why, but I'd like to hear from some of you.
I think he probably felt like it was something he had to do himself, for her. Also you guys are forgetting- scenes were cut out! That is one of the reasons everyone is fighting to get the director's cut released so we can see those scenes. She dove off the cliff because she fell in love with him in those scenes that were cut out.
