: Okay, forgive me, but I am an enthusiastic but uneducated fan of LOTM who is wondering exactly what weapon Chingachgook is carrying during the movie, especially when he thrashes Magua at the end. It looks at times like a big ax, a sword, the end of a musket . . . I've watched several times and still can't figure it. Please help! I'm wondering and don't know where to find out. Thanks.

It is commonly called a "gunstock tomahawk" because of its shape.
Was made of hardwood, with an iron, brass or flint speak head sunk into the business end. Used by many woodlands tribes. Trade tomahawks for the most part replaced such weapons, but in the movie you can also see Hurons using the hard maple ball headed club...these sometime also had a spike of iron or some such sunk into the ball. Nasty weapons. Huge headache!
