: : :...IMAGINING a Cora/Uncas relationship depicted on film. Somehow I think Cora would have to be played by someone else, though. Either that, or Eric would need to become extremely self-assured in his love scenes! But then, we've never actually SEEN him do a love scene, so how would we know? --oh, this is a whole other topic, sorry. I can't seem to stay out of that realm!)
: : : Myrrh

: : : Mmmh, y-e-s, imagination works quite well for that, no problem. So, you think Madeleine as Cora is too strong or dominant to fit with Uncas? I don't know... I can imagine him being self-assured, seductive, sensual enough to make a good pair with her. Or, who else would you suggest?
: : : Petra

: : Okay, so I lied! Here I am again.

: : Ummm, no, I cannot imagine an Uncas/Cora match in the characters' present form. Uncas does not strike me as the type that would ever be attracted to a Cora. In truth I don't really see him spending any long-term time with an Alice type either. How many eyebrows just went up? I'll explain why in a moment.

: : Cora is too strong in persona for Uncas. To me, his character says he may like Cora, or admire her, but said admiration usually does not spark primal feelings. And protection/desire is a strong one. Think about that a sec.

: : IMHO, these feelings can be separated very quickly and easily.

: : The desire to protect is a deeper, more basic human/primate/gut reaction, and it usually happens fairly fast, if not instantly. Admiration is a logical-brain reaction and usually takes time to build. I do not see Cora bringing forth that flash of male primal instinct of desire - to protect, to shield, the "I am needed for her survival" from Uncas.

: : Cora's strong. Sure, she needs help to survive, but it's not this "I need everything". She adapts to their dangers a lot quicker and she survives. Alice barely takes in one situation when she is faced with another.

: : Hawkeye, of course, is another matter entirely. We can quickly see the passion element spark between Cora and Hawkeye. Right? Note here, as stated above, the reaction was fast. He saw Magua aiming at Cora, which yanked that protection from him within seconds after arriving on the scene. The same comparison can be said when Uncas takes hold of Alice after he ran off the horses. Of course, it's a lot more subtle. I stop you, and do this for your survival.

: : Now if I try to image The Kiss between Uncas and Cora - **oh sigh** - it just doesn't work. I cannot even see him wanting to kiss her and I cannot image Cora's passion sparking to life within his arms. No chemistry.

: : I can see Uncas kissing Alice a smooch or two, yet I have a really hard time trying to see Alice getting all hot and lathered up over it. Chemistry's only coming from one side. She is too young, too naive. Don't get me wrong. I do like Alice and Jodhi did a wonderful job of bringing her to life. Even the script said Alice had sensed danger and wandered off toward a fissure. It did not say she felt afraid and went looking for Uncas.

: : Sometimes it even runs through my mind - Why was Uncas in love with Alice anyway? Someone want to take on that topic? And I'm still not convinced she loved him.

: : And I will have to agree with Myrrh...we don't see Uncas kiss Alice, so we don't know how they handled it on film. Was it any good? To repeat for the 100-millionth time, the kiss never should have been taken out. It sure doesn't help when we have never seen Eric play a physical love scene on camera either. I do believe he would have handled it wonderfully. What do you think? He sure played the romantic scene in Follow The River great. Remember when Wild Cat tries to talk the extremely dunderheaded Mary Ingles into going away with him to Kispoko Town?

: :

: : Why did I say Uncas wouldn't spend long-term time with Alice? Of course I do have to project into the future for this, but, after months and months of caring for Alice, in every little way she would need, I would think he would grow tired of it. He wants a woman, and since she couldn't adapt in the least, I think he would finally see her more as an eternal child.

:
: Ha, great post, Lynn! I have to agree with you about Uncas and Alice. When I was watching the movie for the first time, I didn't even get that there was supposed to be any attraction between them, I guess I interpreted those "longing looks" more as cautious, worrisome, even critical. So, when he pulled her back from the fall, I thought: "Hey, now what's that supposed to mean, the movie is almost over and they're starting a new plot?" And, Alice did look younger than the 16 that Jodhi May was at the time, I would have guessed 14 maybe.
: So if Madeleine Stowe as Cora was too old, anyone else you would have picked to pair with Uncas? How about Juliette Binoche? Or Helena Bonham-Carter?
: Petra

IMHO,Helena Bonham-Carter would be my choice of the two mentioned above---she always does beautifully in period pieces and she's one of my faves---
