: I read something by Russell Means about this. There were American Indian extras brought in for the filming. They were mostly used at night, and they stayed in horrible, terribly hot shacks during the day. Russell Means, Daniel Day-Lewis, and Eric Schweig picketed for about four hours before anything was done about it.

I knew about the working conditions, and about the strike, and Means, Schweig, and Day-Lewis' participation. But what I was getting at was if this was specifically why the Academy snubbed the film that year. So, is it true that actors make up most of the Academy membership? Because, if so, then I can certainly see the connection.
