: This discussion is wonderful, and now I'm convinced that you, Jo, have hit on the answer...left horse/pelts at cabin, went out (to hunt?), ran across war party, tracked 'em, headed back to cabin, found massacre, horse dispatched and pelts stolen by attackers.

: However, I want to address Uncas' earring on the wrong side - the reversed negative. Seems like the continuity person was doing his/her job this time. Uncas stopped to look at her; to her left was the river, so Uncas must have been standing to her right, with the trees behind him, correct? They almost had to reverse the negative, because if they hadn't, it would have looked as if Uncas was standing to her left...and had that been the case, he'd have had to have been gazing at her from the opposite side of the river! Does this make sense to anyone else or am I just looney?

: (In any event, he even looks good backwards. A pretty symmetrical face, wouldn't you say? Rare in human beings.)

: Myrrh

: I think Jo has it right too, actually I think it just wasn't thought about again and they( movie people) thought was trivial and no one would ever think twice about it. Like Haweye's shirt and hair being dry very soon after swimming to the fort. If his shirt was buckskin, as the one in Chimney Rock was, it would have taken hours for it to dry.
: Joe
