A couple of points:
I discovered (I think) something I'd never noticed before.
In the final scene, after Hawkeye and Cora exchange their silent communication (the little nod), and they turn to face the vista, I think I see a tear streaking down Hawkeye's face...straight down from the left eye, beside the nose. Look for it and tell me if you see it too.

Also, reading a quote from DDL on the Even More Mohican Musings page, it becomes obvious that most of the dialogue from that final scene was cut out. DDL refers to what Chingachgook says about the frontier moving further west, and there eventually being no need for men like Hawkeye. The script pages tell us that Hawkeye asked Cora to stay with him and be his wife. There was much said in that scene! I'd like to see how it played. We need a director's cut!
