I always assumed that the guard got taken out by a bullet too. As Kiki said, "it's details like that that make a difference!"
I wish the movie included a scene of Jack and the others slipping away from the fort. The timing here is rather ambiguous: the colonists make plans to leave and Jack says "whoever is going be back in an hour." As the group breaks up, Nathaniel goes off in search of Cora. I always assumed that after he spent time with her (which had to be less than an hour), he went and covered Jack and the others, then went to the sleep quarters, only to be arrested a short time later.
Another missing gap is how did Cora find out Nathaniel had been arrested so quickly. It seems all those events happened in the same night, so one could only assume that Nathaniel told her what was going on and she anticipated his arrest?? Does anyone have a different take on these events??
