: : You mean it wasn't Russell Means jumping over the rolling soldier on the bank? before he got to the canoes? (Or did I misread your posting.)

: Jo, I just finished checking the entire canoe chase from start to finish in glorious slo-mo, and I can tell you it is definitely Russell Means jumping over the soldier. The Chingachgook imposter shows up only IN the canoe, and it is very difficult to tell, indeed. As they paddle away from the shore, the camera is on Uncas, and behind him, you can see about 1/4 of the imposter's face. The only way I could tell it wasn't Russell Means is that the imposter's hairline isn't quite as receding. (Sorry, Mr. Means, but it's true.) The next very brief glimpse of his face comes after they have crossed the lake, entered the river heading towards the falls. The camera is directly behind the canoe (looks like it's down at water level, a point of view I love), then the point of view switches to the river bank & you glimpse the canoe going by between the tree branches. First, a flash of Cora's face goes by, then, there's that imposter again, for the briefest of moments. Again, the hairline is my only real clue that it isn't Russell Means. He is similar enough in facial structure to pass otherwise, in this very quick glimpse.

: Once the canoes have gone over the falls, you can clearly see that it is back to the "REAL" Chingachgook, as Russell Means shows up again in the canoe. It was great fun tracking this down. Another thanks to Soldier #2 for sharing it with us.

Marcia,
Thank you for checking this out. You did a great job! (I didn't have time today!) I would hate to jolt anyone's view of the movie; but it is these details I love! While you were slow-mo checking this out... who WAS first in the canoe, Uncas or Hawkeye? My eyesight might be feeble, but I still think Uncas got in the front, Hawkeye later walked towards the front, in the same scene, as the camera was rolling, next scene, while out on the lake,
Hawkeye was in front.... did you clear this up for us any????
Again, thank you soldier #2, for a great piece of info! Glad you "lived" to tell us! (But if Duncan got shot in the leg, he certainly is quick on the feet up the mountain!) (Details, Details) (Must remember the full moon!)
Jo
