: Why didn't Uncas allow Alice to go ahead with Magua to their destination, follow them there, and then devise a way to smuggle her out or steal her away?
Myrrh, I always figured Magua never had any intention of keeping Alice alive. It was always his plan to see her and Cora burn, to "wipe Munro's seed from the earth forever," and I don't think he changed his mind just because the Sachem told him to. He wouldn't have stormed out to head to the Hurons "on the Lake," otherwise. Maybe Uncas figured, as you said, it was now or never if she was to be rescued. He knew Hawkeye & Chingachgook were right behind him, and they never let a little thing like being outnumbered stop them before. He also had the advantage of cutting them off on that narrow trail where they had to fight him one by one. It could have worked, perhaps, if Magua had not been stronger or faster. I DO think Magua had a change of mind after killing Uncas, when he held his hand out to Alice, and at that point might have kept her alive.
