I see Magua's reaction as one where she is going against his
psychological profile of her. She is showing some "backbone",
something which Indian's admired in their captives and which up
until then Alice had very little of. He was very concerned with
honor. His posession of her increased his, and her taking her own
life, taking back her control from him, increased hers. I saw a
fleeting moment of puzzlement, then a glimpse of respect. She beat
him at his own game. Then I saw his reaction afterwards as, "Well,
she did it! I didn't think she had it in her."
