Hi, Eric...this is one more place where I feel Hawkeye demonstrated he was in complete charge of the situation. And you are right, a "gentleman" of the day probably would not have acted that way. Which is why, I think, Cora first looks flustered, then smiles back at him. BTW, to me this is the pivotal scene in the film, where their relationship is defined. It is as though Hawkeye asks, Cora answers, and he leaves there smiling to himself because he knows it is decided...they belong to each other.
