Yes, the French and Indian Wars officially began July 3, 1754 with the defeat of George Washington at Fort Necessity in Western Pennsylvania.

The French and Indian Wars are considered a part of the Seven Year Wars which ended with the Treaty of Paris in 1763 and the removal of the French from most everything east of the Mississippi (with the exception of a couple of islands in the St. Lawrence, I believe). At the moment, I cannot recall why they lasted nine years....I think it had something to do with the fact that the larger war on the continent lasted seven years....
