DDL vs. An American Hawkeye

Please don't shoot me with a virtual reality musket:o) but ever since watching LOTM, I've wondered why DDL took on the role of Hawkeye. Being non-american, why wasn't he intimidated by the fact that "Last of the Mohicans" is considered the first bonafide American novel and therefore its hero the lst fictional AMERICAN hero???....any thoughts?.......ann
