Not at all. Just saying that the speech patterns the script has Hawkeye using sound like those of a "rustic" with what I would call "downhome" phrases, like "two days an' a bit" (where I would say "a couple of days"). "Subtle" just doesn't sound like a word he would be likely to use, to my mind. Actually, even the concept of being subtle doesn't fit the Hawkeye I know and love.

The other argument for "sudden-like" is that the whole line is an old joke. I've heard it and variations of it many times through the years, and the words "sudden" or "suddenly" occur often. (A variation WITHOUT "sudden" but still funny: John Lennon, when asked "How do you find America?", said "Turn left at Greenland.") We southerners are to be watched at all times, as we can surprise you, real sudden-like, with bits of info like that. ;o)
