: Hi Ann,
: I thought I detected a bit of an accent when they are lying in the burial ground talking about his birth family and he says something like "I'm not remembering them. I wasn't but one or two." It struck me that here was DDL, a man with an English/Irish accent trying to act with an American accent, lying next to Madeline Stowe, a woman with an American accent trying to act with an English accent. I pick up accents easily, but that would have had me stumbling for sure!
Yes, Chris -- it's one thing to fall into an accent jokingly, with friends, but what must it be like to remember lines & at the same time focus on an unnatural way of speaking?...they both did a terrific job. It's strange that an intense actor like DDL wasn't concerned about loss of dramatic effect because of the "accent" distraction. Although, his acting didn't seem to suffer at all.
As far as Madeleine's accent, I saw her a week after my first viewing of LOTM, and was taken aback. Don't know the name of the movie. There were 4 women in the west...another period piece. When I heard her speak naturally, it sounded strange. Her voice is even huskier than in LOTM. Of course, it was a tom-boyish role -- riding, shooting, etc. Thought to myself is this really the delicate(with inner-strength) English rose from LOTM???...ann
