Hi, Ann. While I would have voted for LOM for Best Soundtrack, it couldn't compete with Disney. The Little Mermaid won, I believe. As for the Oscar it DID win, I have always been under the impression that the quality and realism of the sound in the battle scenes and the massacre were what earned it this award. (You can certainly hear every whackity-whack of a tomahawk & slice of a knife.) That, plus just the general realism in sound, period...which is why it is often hard to understand the actual lines being spoken. Many movies tone down the background sounds in order to make the dialog clearer, but this isn't how things would sound in real life, so to speak. Therefore, in movies where they really strive for realism, the trend seems to be to NOT tone down background noises, hence our missing of some lines. (That was a confused paragraph, but I hope you can understand what I'm trying to say.)
