: : Sarah's comment in her "why we can't watch" post below about Uncas' look at Alice in his final scene, brought to mind another thought I've had about the massacre scene.

: : Why didn't Michael Mann have Uncas rather than Chingachgook(Yeah!..believe I spelled it correctly:o) help Alice escape from the massacre?? would have been oh so much more romantic if he had.....he seems to deliberately keep the focus off the relationship between the younger couple.

: : The hopeless romantic.....ann

: Ann,

: I've asked the same question -- especially after noting (1) the few moments they first look straight into each others eyes (heavy sigh) when he chases away the horses and holds her gently, and (2) how he is supporting her with his arm under hers as they climb up the approach to the fort, as though he (as was noted several days ago) was her protector, and (3) how he pulls her close to him and holds her so fiercely behind the waterfall in the cave.

: Moreover, it was noted by someone (Soldier #2?) that they went out AFTER the scene in the cave to film Uncas looking up at Alice as she climbs the waterfall early one (the other 'I wish he was looking at me like that' scene). That Mann took Eric S. BACK for that scene seems to indicate he wanted to build up the Uncas-Alice relationship as opposed to down-play it.

: My only explanations for Chingachgook helping up Alice at the massacre are either (a) they shot that early and Mann hadn't decided to play up the relationship or (b) at the massacre, Uncas's job was to make sure they aren't attacked WHILE she is getting up. Or both. What do you think?

: Cheers,
: Sarah

Sarah, Of course, I've no idea what the filming process entails, however, when I read Eric's post saying that Mann sent the cameras after Uncas in the parking lot my thought was that possibly the director had viewed the rushes(believe that's the term) and Alice's hesitation and profile expression caught his expert film-making eye. He wanted to take full advantage of that moment hence the after thought to have Uncas gaze with what looks like the beginning of more than casual interest at her......take care, ann
