: In answer to thoughts posted of Alice perhaps softening Magua - or whether he was taking her back to bump her off at his pleasure...

: ...remember on the cliff edge where he looks almost gentle and afraid when she walks towards the edge, how he lingers a second when she throws herself off, as if hes a little in shock..could it be that at the moment he wanted to make a fresh start with the beautiful young innocent?????

: wolfie,

Scotto's Response:

Although that sounds like a good idea (and it's certainly what I would have done, in Magua's place!), I don't believe that theory. I think that to Magua, Alice was his "prize," so to speak. He tried to be gentle to her because he DIDN'T want to be cheated of her, by her committing suicide. But once she did, I think his brief lingering afterwards was like saying: "I can't believe she did that. Oh, well. Whatever." It was a feeling of disgust or disdain Magua was expressing, in my opinion.

Yes, Alice WAS quite the "beautiful young innocent", wasn't she?
