The reason I posted this thread is because there was so much talk of Alice as "strong" and Magua as "hero", that I thought it time to seriously oppose those views and see what you all could come up with to support them. This is all in fun (though I do STRONGLY believe what I am saying!) ... I remain unconvinced.

Take Massacre Valley, the example I presented ... HOW in the world can you find strength in her behavior there? When Cora shoots the Indian after Beams is killed, her expression is totally blank. Then, when about to be killed herself, she offers absolutely NO resistance whatsoever, not even a verbal peep. She just meekly accepted her fate!

Just as I can find no way to justify Magua as a hero, I must believe Alice is lacking in fortitude. This is not a criticism of either character. Both actors were superb. Both played their parts as Cooper/Mann wanted them to be portrayed. If we believe either was the opposite of what they appeared, then they failed miserably as actors!
