: SCOTTO'S RESPONSE:

: Vita, this was a point I mentioned--and was further discussed by the gang--in previous posts. The consensus is that Uncas' love, affection or concern for Alice overrode his better judgment. The same thing that happens to MOST of us, when WE have strong feelings for someone. To be sure, it was a fatal mistake. But that's what makes us human.

Scotto -- I agree whole-heartedly that it was his overwhelming desire to save Alice, combined with youth and inexperience, that was his undoing. But he also ran into bad luck in that he could never have known whether his father and Hawkeye were close or not and having arrived at a place where he would be seen if he didn't attack, he HAD to attack or be attacked by the first Huron.

Of course, if he had had good luck, it would have been an entirely different story and he would not have broken our hearts as he did.

Cheers,
Sarah
