OK, I had never even thought of that point, which is the exact answer I am looking for! So he attacked because he HAD to attack, because it was his only chance, in other words, he just had no way of following them and choosing a more opportune momemtn. See, he is an elk-hunter, brave warrior, intelligent, intuititive etc. He IS in control of his emotions. I am sure he survived all coming-of-age rituals where patience is taught. He just would not have attacked without considering many other options, unless he saw Alice in mortal danger, which at that point, she was not yet in danger.

So your observation that he chose that moment to attack because it was attack or be attacked, makes perfect sense.
