: Hi, Katherine,

: Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us. My only problem with the Alice you describe is I honestly don't think that was what Mann was trying to say about "his" Alice. I really believe he wanted Alice to look utterly lost & shell-shocked, without a bit of inner strength to help her through. This is not to say I don't have sympathy for her. I do, indeed, understand that what she has been through has pushed her over the edge, and I suspect it would have done the same to most young women of her time/station. This is what I think makes Cora's character so wonderfully extraordinary, in comparison.

: I believe Mann's intent & Jodhi's wonderful portrayal were supposed to show this contrast between the two women, and think the movie is the better for it. But I also believe that as we each watch a film, we are bringing to it part of ourselves and our personal life experiences. Therefore, we each take away something a little different, as demonstrated by the many viewpoints expressed on this board.

I think that Alice had some mixture of strength and weaknesses about her. She wasn't entirely strong because all her life she was treated like a baby by her older sister, who assumed the role of a mother. So in my view, Cora learned to be stronger by trying to raise Alice as her own, and grow into a more motherly type who experiences much. On ther other token, Alice was always pampered and taken care of, so she didn't experience much strife, or manual labor. But IMO, one can not say outright that she was entirely weak. She didn't scream in total dissarray like some women during that century would have. And she managed to calm her nerves a bit down as they were approaching the fort. She mounded enough courage to protest against Uncas's scurrying of the horses. Plus, she was by nature shy and intimidated. I know people who are very very shy, but are somewhat strong in will power and potential to be strong. I myself can support that, because I am known to be a very shy and quiet person. So I can understand why ALice might act the way she does.
