Katherine asks]

: What do you all think?

I think you should read my post on Sensitivity. You have made my argument for me here, by explaining how Alice's strength is used up...thus she gives in to weakness & kills herself. It doesn't matter if some folks are given more strength than others...what matters is that you DON'T GIVE IN to your own weaknesses and take the easy way out. Alice gave in. Cora did not, and would not have.

And I also addressed these comments about Cora being weak when the knife was at her throat...Hawkeye was THERE...right in front of her. She was smart enough to stop fighting for a split second & let him get rid of her assailant. That's just common sense. Until that point, she had been fighting like crazy. Alice had not, did not, would not, could not fight. She stood like a deer paralyzed in the headlights of an oncoming car & never even put up a token resistance to what was happening. She didn't even TRY.

Courage comes from overcoming one's natural weaknesses. Giving in to them is wrong. Hannah said it very well...Alice was more afraid of living than of stepping off that cliff. She gave in to her fear. No matter how you try to color it, you cannot change that fact.

And to recognize this does not mean we don't love Alice. She simply wasn't strong enough to overcome her fear and try to save herself or avenge Uncas.

MMMM
